Interesting topic!
I'm a firm believer that DJ's role is to bring new music to his/her crowd. It's all well and good being a "Crowd Pleaser" and playing classic, after classic after boring classic.
Where is the fun in that? What seperates you then, from say... a juke box!
Dare to be different! I love hearing new music when I go out =o)

That said.. if you put your mind to it, you can make even "classics" interesting, and new.
I know it's not quite as possible with "band" based music, but remixes are always a great to way to bring classics, whilst not sounding stale and "cookie cutter"! And hey, if you got the skills, why not make your own remixes!
I can't wait to head back over to Oz, I've got some remixes that are going to blow the elektro rooms apart! =oD

i think it's good to have a mixture, but i hate the idea of limiting the music to just the bands' singles (cough cough blink).
i like the idea of playing some obscure material from well known bands that people like but are sick of hearing the same songs.
i have had a good responses from playing some bands that no-one has ever heard of - basically if it's good music, some people are gonna like it and a few will snob it.

People will appreciate expanding their horizons. Mixing it with some oldies won't hurt, it'll keep the interest. Sometimes though an oldy is another person's newy...

Both.. New stuff is great, but classics issomething everyone can sit around drunk to and sing all the lyrics.. or scream them.. whatever..

I agree it's important to focus on the new stuff, but an oldie should be thrown in every once in a while as well I reckon.
